Since BMW revealed the 2023 XM as the first dedicated M model in decades, over five months have passed. It is not an inline-six mid-engined supercar like the M1 was; instead, it is a robust SUV with a plug-in hybrid V8. Additionally, it replaces the once-standard manual gearbox and RWD setup with an automated + xDrive configuration. The style, form, and size instantly distinguish it from the low-slung coupe of the late 1970s and early 1980s. As a result, it leaves the noticeable technical changes aside.
A recent in-depth walkaround video reveals what could be the 2023 XM’s most eye-catching specification. The electric SUV stands out in Cape York Green. It delivers noticeable gold accents flowing up the side of the car. It also highlights the shape of the sizable kidney grille and the rear diffuser. These 23-inch wheels, the biggest BMW ever installed out of the factory, also feature gold-painted surfaces. Additionally, the XM badge’s exterior is also coated in gold.
The accompanying video showcases some of the distinctive features available for the XM. This includes the optional antique leather decorating the top areas of the dashboard and door panels. It shows Munich’s attempt to compete with the Lamborghini Urus and Aston Martin DBX. The Deep Lagoon leather upholstery that covers the back passenger seat cushions is on hand.
The opulent headliner with a prism-like structure lighted up by 100 LEDs set on the sides is another XM-only feature. The top-of-the-line BMW M includes an additional feature known as an M Lounge, which refers to the sides of the backrests extending into the door trim panel to give sofa-like comfort for rear passengers. The XM has the same wheelbase as the X7 but only comes with two rows of seats, so the cabin should feel quite roomy.
The charging wire to recharge the 25.7-kWh battery pack using the port placed on the left-front fender is inside the XM-badged bag, with the M colours decorating the straps in the cargo area. The next-generation M5 will also have an electric V8 by using the same twin-turbo 4.4-litre “S68” engine. Thus, the plug-in hybrid powertrain is a taste of things to come.
The XM will attempt to develop its own client base in a luxury sector packed with high-performance SUVs. According to BMW, the model’s key markets will be the US, China, and the Middle East. Given that the model starts at a hefty $159,000, it will be fascinating to watch how it does in terms of sales. The XM Label Red, which will be released later this year, will have an MSRP of nearly $185,000, which is almost $14,000 more costly than an ALPINA XB7 and a staggering $45,000 more expensive than an X6 M.
