BMW X3 M40d Turns Heads: Quad Exhaust Upgrade by 3D Design

In 2023, discussing a modified diesel vehicle, especially one built for performance, is rare. However, the BMW X3 M40d stands out as a specialized vehicle. Despite its limited appeal, 3D Design dedicated time to crafting an aftermarket package. This Japanese tuner infused the updated model, released over two years ago, with a bolder demeanour.

The X3 M40d isn’t a full-blown M vehicle. And yet, an aftermarket specialist equipped it with a quad exhaust system for a sportier rear appearance. Indeed, M Performance vehicles featuring four exhaust tips are already rolling out of BMW factories. The M760e leads the charge, and the X1 M35i will soon follow. While it may seem over-the-top for a diesel four-cylinder crossover, 3D Design offers this impressive exhaust design for the less potent X3 xDrive20d.

The coilover system on this X3 is available only in Japan, but the tuner offers a lowering kit for M40d and 20d models internationally. The showcased crossover features distinctive 21-inch silver and black wheels. M Performance and standard variants of the popular crossover can be outfitted with sizable side skirts and a roof-mounted spoiler. Enhancements also include a prominent front spoiler and a redesigned diffuser, complemented by the quad exhaust tips.

3D Design has not upgraded the 3.0-litre “B57” straight-six engine, which delivers 315 horsepower (235 kW) and 680 Nm (502 lb-ft) of torque. The ALPINA XD3 boasts a potent quad-turbo engine generating 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) and 394 horsepower (290 kW) for those seeking more power.

The X3 M40d, X4 M40d, and their ALPINA equivalents represent a vanishing breed due to stricter emissions regulations. For diesel performance car enthusiasts, there’s still time to acquire one before they become a thing of the past.
