Due to strict emission rules, BMW was forced to end the V12 engine and the V8-powered 7 Series in Europe. Therefore, the 760i is no longer offered in Europe. Customers looking for a faster G70 now choose between the M760e xDrive and the i7 M70 xDrive. This all-electric model will be ready for purchase later this year.
In a rare video featuring the M760e, we glimpse this plug-in hybrid luxury sedan and experience its driving dynamics. Despite having six fewer cylinders than its predecessor, it remains impressively fast. BMW asserts a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) time of 4.3 seconds and a 50 to 75 mph (80 to 120 km/h) time of just 2.7 seconds. Does it deserve the M Performance designation? In our view, absolutely.
Combining the 3.0-litre turbocharged engine with electric motors, the M760e generates a robust 571 hp (420 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. Despite this, some argue that the 6.6-litre engine would have been preferable, disregarding the hybrid’s power. While twelve-cylinder engines are increasingly rare in 2023, the Mercedes S-Class, the primary rival of the 7 Series, still offers a Maybach S680 variant with this configuration.
The future of twelve-cylinder engines appears uncertain, as Rolls-Royce has announced that they will no longer introduce new V12-powered vehicles, planning to abandon combustion engines entirely by 2030. Additionally, Bentley is set to cease production of cars with the W12 engine in 2024. However, the VW Group will still offer twelve-cylinder vehicles, as evidenced by the new Lamborghini Revuelto’s V12 configuration.
The M760e boasted a black leather interior and an optional Frozen Black paint from the Individual catalogue. Differentiating it from other 7 Series models was a flat-bottomed steering wheel adorned with the M emblem. While subtle, these features made it discernibly unique.
