Since M CEO Frank van Meel hinted at a spot for an M4 CS in the lineup last year, we’ve been in the dark. This model would rank above the Competition but below the CSL. A trusted insider from Bimmer Post forums asserts the model got the green light for production.
Reliable sources indicate the first M4 CS will hit the production line in July 2024, wrapping up by June 2025. This timeline aligns with BMW’s practice of producing the mechanically akin M3 CS for a year. The M4 CS, its coupe sibling, is said to share a similar look but with a shift from laser headlights to a new system.
The M4 CS, with new headlights, might be grounded in the planned Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) for the standard M4. As per plans, production of the G82 LCI commences in March 2024, just four months before the CS introduction. Rumour has it the CS will be a beefed-up M3 coupe, boasting xDrive and rear seats, unlike the two-seater RWD M4 CSL. However, the M4 CSL’s laser taillights aren’t expected to reach the M4 CS.
Remember, the M3 CS’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine pumps 543 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed M Steptronic pairs with the inline-six, driving power to all wheels. With an extra 40 horsepower, it bolts to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, compared to the M3 Competition Sedan. BMW standardly includes the M Driver’s Package, capping the electronically controlled speed at a brisk 180 mph.
It’s not just the M4. The M2 may also get the CS upgrade soon, potentially by 2025. BMW is testing an M3 CS Touring too. But this super wagon hasn’t officially cleared yet. And if it does, BMW needs to carve out space at the bustling Munich plant.
