In 2023, electrification tops the charts, spanning hybrid to all-electric vehicles. Yet, BMW values the trusty diesel engine. Many customers, especially in Europe, still favour its usefulness. Therefore, BMW’s eighth-generation 5 Series keeps its diesel option alive. Initially, it comes with a four-cylinder engine. By 2024, an impressive inline-six will join the lineup.
In the meantime, a fresh walkaround video spotlights the 2.0-litre 520d, featuring an xDrive variant with the optional M Sport Package. BMW Slovakia unveiled it at a unique event. This was at the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum in Bratislava, which recently showcased the formidable V12-powered X5 Le Mans. The vehicle boasts 21-inch bi-colour wheels and blue brake callipers. With a striking Tanzanite Blue finish and sleek black details, it stands out as a luxurious diesel car.
The affordable 5 Series showcases a classic kidney grille with silver vertical slats set against a glossy black backdrop. This differs from the sportier grille of the i5 M60, also seen in the upcoming M5. Often, BMW models carry multiple Shadowline enhancements. However, this one maintains silver highlights, even around the signature Hofmeister kink. It’s now adorned with a bold “5” logo. Opening the doors reveals B-pillars of a similar design. The car’s blue brake callipers complement it well.
The video might not entirely depict the G60’s larger size than its predecessor. In reality, it extends the wheelbase by 0.8 inches and is 3.4 inches longer, 1.3 inches wider, and 1.4 inches taller than the G30. The 520d xDrive’s interior features an Individual Silverstone finish with Atlas Grey accents. A dark silver trim sporting an Aluminum Rhombicle pattern enhances the dashboard.
The BMW iX introduced us to the iDrive 8 infotainment system. BMW has utilized a dual-screen setup for years now. However, version 8.5, first seen in the i7 M70 and now in the new 5 Series, quickly becomes the luxury brand’s favourite. It aims to offer a more straightforward interface and more home screen shortcuts for popular features.
