Rumours about a new BMW M5 Touring have swirled for over a year. Some even hint that the super wagon’s third edition already bears the “G99” codename. The M boss, Frank van Meel, hinted at Nürburgring testing this year. Its rivals? The AMG E63 Estate and Audi RS6 Avant. Although testing hasn’t occurred yet, this teaser suggests it’s on the horizon.
The BMW M5 Touring prototypes will begin their first road tests on city streets, highways, and rural routes in the coming days. Track testing, including on the Nordschleife, will come next. The high-performance wagon sports protruding fenders like the M3 Touring and is fully disguised in the standard BMW garb. We are dealing with a plug-in hybrid vehicle, the second M model after the XM, to feature a PHEV system. This was indicated by the “Electrified Vehicle” stickers on the front doors.
As the M5 Sedan (G90) gears up to exit production in July 2024, we anticipate the M5 Touring making its grand entrance in November. Unlike its compact counterpart, the M3 Touring, speculation hints at this high-performance wagon arriving on US shores. In an intriguing twist, the M division discloses plans to refit the XM’s debut plug-in hybrid V8 into the new M5. With this in mind, insiders predict an astonishing power surge, nearing a formidable 718 horsepower.
The third iteration of the M5 long roof will use the new S68 engine. This departs from the rare M5 Touring E34’s inline-six and the E61’s big 5.0-litre V10. The 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 will team up with an electric motor, resulting in the weightiest and most potent M5. Just like the formidable XM, the new M5 models will exclusively offer xDrive with automatic transmission.
BMW will add some flair to the upcoming 5 Series wagon by offering it an all-electric M Performance variant before reviving the M5 Touring. Until the new M5 (G90) dethrones it in 2024, the i5 M60 Touring will mimic the sedan currently at the top of the list.
