BMW’s 5 Series and i5 in 2024 NACTOY Race

The 2024 North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Yearâ„¢ (NACTOY) Awards are nearing their 30th anniversary. From 52 eligible vehicles, 25 remain, as revealed at the 2023 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

Competing for the 2024 North American Car of the Year title are the BMW 5 Series (G60) and its electric counterpart, the i5. Alongside, tough competitors include the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, Ford Mustang, Honda Accord, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Subaru Impreza, among others.

However, BMW is absent from the 2024 North American Truck of the Year and Utility Vehicle of the Year categories. Included in the truck finalists are Chevrolet Colorado, Chevrolet Silverado EV, Ford Ranger, Ford Super Duty, and GMC Canyon. Utility Vehicle contenders are the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Dodge Hornet, Genesis Electrified GV70, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Kona, Kia EV9, Mazda CX-90, Toyota Grand Highlander, and Volvo EX30.

In addition, 50 NACTOY jurors will conduct comparison tests to determine the final three contenders in each category in Michigan. Further, the shortlist releases on November 16, with winners announced on January 4, 2024, in metro Detroit. The 5 Series Sedan lineup in the United States comprises the 530i with or without xDrive, the 540i xDrive, the electric i5 eDrive40, and the i5 M60. The only PHEV is the 550e xDrive, with the rear-wheel-drive 530e available in other markets. Diesels were discontinued in the US after the 2018 model year.
