BMW XM’s Agility on Display in Slalom and Moose Tests

Stretching 5.1 meters in length and boasting a 2-meter width, the BMW XM commands presence, not agility. Its remarkable 2,710-kilogram frame, unprecedented in Munich’s non-armoured roster, sets a new benchmark. As we gear up for real-world handling tests, we keep our expectations grounded for this monumental M model.

KM77’s Spanish team took the iconic Cape York Green BMW XM for a spin to test its mettle in slalom and moose tests. Equipped with the largest optional 23-inch wheels and shod with front Pirelli P Zero 275/35 R23 and rear 315/30 R23 tyres, this electrified BMW XM SUV is a behemoth on the road. Despite boasting rear-wheel steering, active roll stabilisation, and electronic dampers, it doesn’t quite aspire to match the nimble M2’s agility.

Boasting a massive frame, the elite M vehicle navigated the slalom test gracefully, showcasing restrained understeer and oversteer. This BMW XM benefited from a hands-off approach from the driving assist features, smoothly gliding through the cones. Clocking in at 22.9 seconds, it triumphed over the M340d xDrive Touring by 0.8 seconds and outpaced the earlier MINI Countryman plug-in hybrid by 0.4 seconds.

During the ensuing moose test, the XM faced challenges, knocking a cone at a 77 km/h entrance speed. It succeeded at a slightly reduced 74 km/h on subsequent trials, maintaining 66 km/h midway and exiting at 48 km/h.

Despite its grandeur and heft, the XM impressed with its agility and stability, boasting little body roll and predictable handling. Summarising the event, the evaluators acknowledged the vehicle surpassed expectations, affirming its performance defied its substantial size and weight.
