BMW’s Naming Revamp: Decisions Pending

UK’s Car Magazine reported that BMW is revamping its naming system with the Neue Klasse cars in 2025. The upcoming X3 SUVs will use names like X320 and X330 for traditional versions and iX330, iX340, and iX350 for the electric ones.

Two important things to note: First, the G45 BMW X3 arrives before the Neue Klasse iX3 electric crossover. Gasoline models will lose the “i” and become “BMW X3 30,” “BMW X3 30 xDrive,” or “BMW X3 M50 xDrive.” Diesel variants are “BMW X3 40d xDrive,” and PHEVs are “BMW X3 30e xDrive.” Other global variants exist but aren’t covered here.

Second, the Neue Klasse iX3 names aren’t finalized. They’ll begin with “iX3,” but it’s uncertain if they’ll use iX330, iX350 or iX3 30, iX3 50. BMW’s naming, especially for electrified vehicles with the “i,” has grown complex.

The future aims to simplify as all BMWs shift to the all-electric Neue Klasse platform. This change will streamline the naming. Meanwhile, the G45 BMW X3, coming in the summer of 2024, previews this transition with names like the X3 M50 and X3 30 xDrive. BMW’s naming is evolving for an electric future, with ongoing changes and a goal to simplify as the Neue Klasse era arrives. Expect a temporary mix of naming strategies as BMW fully embraces electric vehicles.
