Autotrader UK’s Rory Reid is back, this time taking the BMW M2 G87 for a thrilling spin on the racetrack. With the reveal of this new sportscar just weeks ago, the spotlight turns to a key question. Does the BMW M2’s weight dampen the fun? Interestingly, the BMW M2’s weight closely mirrors that of the M4, often matching it in various scenarios. Sporting a manual gearbox and a sleek carbon fibre roof, the M2 tips the scales at 3,814 lbs. It’s essentially on par with the M4 when it features a manual transmission and carbon roof. Opting for the BMW M2 with an automatic gearbox and sans the carbon roof pushes the weight over 3,900 lbs. This makes it as hefty for a car its size.
Yet, during a BMW hands-on review on both road and track, the G87 M2 skillfully hid its weight on the road and track. We rarely noticed its bulk, except when comparing it to the lighter F87 M2 CS. Still, the latest BMW M2 stands out with its features. It boasts the powerful BMW S58 engine, an improvement over the B58 found in many BMW models. This 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six engine pushes out 453 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. The car channels power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. Both options are designed to enhance the car’s performance.
Rory Reid expertly demonstrates the G87 M2’s versatility, highlighting its prowess on a damp track and its suitability as a “daily driver.” Given the preference for eight-speed automatics over six-speed manuals in the UK, Reid’s review vehicle is also equipped with an automatic transmission.
