[VIDEO] BMW M3 Touring Takes On AMG E63 in Drag Race

Despite the rise of crossovers and SUVs, a swift wagon remains the ultimate all-rounder. It delivers ample performance and practicality, ticking nearly every box. What else could one ask for in a vehicle? Luxury cars boast plush interiors and come packed with tech. The Mercedes-AMG E63 Estate and the BMW M3 Touring exemplify cars that truly have it all.

Watching these two superwagons face off in a drag race is thrilling, even though they cater to distinct markets. The G81, which is not very lightweight, has the advantage of being a bit lighter despite its lesser power. The AMG, a beast of a family car, packs 612 horsepower and 850 Nm from a mighty V8. In contrast, the eagerly awaited M3 wagon by BMW delivers 510 horsepower and 650 Nm from an inline-six. The race promises to be a nail-biter, with the Mercedes tipping the scales 100 kg heavier. Both cars feature automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive, setting the stage for an electrifying showdown.

After clinching the decider, the E63 S Estate emerged as the fastest overall, leading the rolling races to the half-mile mark. However, in the ultimate challenge, an emergency brake test from 100 mph, the M3 Touring secured victory. This outcome wasn’t unexpected, given that the BMW is the lighter of the two performance wagons.

The win in the braking test was essentially a consolation. This duel paves the way for the eagerly awaited M5 Touring. Rumours suggest it will unleash over 700 horsepower and tip the scales at more than 2,400 kg. Fans are highly anticipating its launch later this year. Meanwhile, AMG is wrapping up the development of a new E63, wagon version included. This next-gen hot Mercedes estate, embracing plug-in hybrid technology, will likely sport an inline-six engine. This marks a departure from the V8 that BMW M previously revealed for the upcoming M5.

In the grand scheme, these straight-line races might seem trivial. Fast wagons excel in versatility, capable of nearly anything. A sports car with similar power will always be lighter and faster. Yet, a performance estate is unmatched for those seeking a single-vehicle solution.
