The classic wagon has become a rarity, relegated to a niche segment with dwindling demand. Yet, in Europe, the tradition of estate cars remains strong, with some manufacturers venturing into fully electric models. Recently, BMW introduced the i5 Touring as a luxurious alternative to Volkswagen’s ID.7 Tourer, marking a subtle shift in the landscape of electric long-roof vehicles.
Volkswagen, however, does not yield easily. Their response comes in the form of the ID.7 GTX Tourer, positioned as the brand’s most powerful wagon yet. With a dual-motor setup boasting 335 horsepower, the GTX Tourer enters the arena as a direct competitor to BMW’s i5 M60 Touring. While performance details are still forthcoming, it’s evident that both models are vying for the title of the ultimate electric sports wagon.
Under the hood, the i5 M60 Touring boasts impressive figures, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, setting a high bar for its competitors. Meanwhile, VW’s GTX Tourer promises a similar level of performance, powered by a lithium-ion battery with a net capacity slightly exceeding that of the i5 Touring. However, the range remains a key consideration, with BMW leading the pack with up to 560 kilometres on a single charge.
Despite the competitive spirit in the European market, neither has plans to introduce their electric long-roof models to the United States. Beyond this rivalry, the electric wagon landscape is diversifying, with other contenders entering the fray. Models like the Peugeot E-308, Opel Astra Electric, MG5, Nio ET5 Touring, and the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo / Cross Turismo are making waves in the electric vehicle market. Looking ahead, BMW is poised to expand its electric portfolio with an i3 Touring. It is expected to debut in the second half of the decade on the Neue Klasse platform.
