2025 BMW M5: The Next Generation Hybrid Beast

The 2025 BMW M5 is set to debut soon, marking the seventh generation of this iconic performance sedan and wagon. This new M5 follows the tradition of blending high performance with family car practicality.

First launched in 1985, the M5 combined the top-of-the-line 5 Series chassis with the powerful engine from the M1 supercar. The 2025 model continues this legacy, borrowing its engine from the XM SUV, though slightly detuned for the M5.

BMW has teased the new M5 with images showing its signature daytime-running lights and illuminated ‘kidney’ grille. It’s confirmed to feature a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, producing 535kW, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a plug-in hybrid system. This setup allows for an electric-only range of over 80 kilometres.

Reports suggest this might be BMW’s last new V8 due to upcoming EU emissions regulations. Despite its powerful engine, the new M5 is expected to weigh around 2435kg, making it heavier than its predecessor. The M5’s design will include subtle yet aggressive upgrades, such as wider wheel arches and large quad exhaust pipes. For the first time in 15 years, a Touring wagon variant will join the sedan.

Inside, the M5 will feature a luxurious, high-tech interior similar to the electric i5, with enhancements like a sports steering wheel, body-hugging seats, and extensive leather and carbon fibre use. The cabin will have twin widescreen displays and fewer physical buttons, replaced by touch-sensitive controls.

BMW may introduce advanced suspension and semi-autonomous driving systems to handle the M5’s increased weight and enhance its performance. These features might include rear-wheel steering and active roll stabilization. Due to the new hybrid system, pricing for the 2025 M5 is expected to exceed $300,000. Official pricing and further details will be announced following its global debut later this year, with production starting in the second half of 2024.
