BMW’s Colour-Changing Car Technology Coming Soon

BMW is set to revolutionize the automotive world with its upcoming colour-changing technology, which is expected to be available within the next three to five years. This innovation, led by Dr. Stella Clarke, uses E Ink technology similar to what’s found in e-readers like the Kindle. With just a tap on your smartphone, you can instantly change your car’s colour, a feature that enhances personal expression and offers practical benefits like reducing cabin heat on sunny days.

An Australian engineer, Dr. Clarke, conceived this idea in her attic and later presented it to BMW during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite initial uncertainties, the concept quickly gained traction, leading to its global debut at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on the BMW iX Flow.

This cutting-edge technology is remarkably energy-efficient, consuming as little power as a single light bulb to change an entire car’s colour. Beyond aesthetics, the technology has practical applications, such as making vehicles more visible in parking lots or replacing traditional ambulance sirens with flashing vehicle colours.

Although this feature is set to debut as a premium offering, BMW is working towards making it more accessible. However, Dr. Clarke acknowledges the challenges ahead, particularly around safety regulations and the rigorous testing required to ensure the technology’s durability.

As the automotive industry takes notice, BMW is in a race to bring this game-changing feature to market, with other competitors not far behind.
