BMW M2 to Get Grippier with New AWD Model Coming in 2026

BMW enthusiasts have long adored the BMW M2 for its powerful engine, manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive charm. However, a recent report from BMWBlog hints at a new twist in the M2 saga—a grippier, all-wheel-drive variant called the M2 xDrive could join the lineup starting August 2026.

The standard M2, already revered for its potent twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that produces an impressive 473 horsepower, might soon send power to all four wheels. Although visually, the M2 xDrive should closely resemble its rear-wheel-drive sibling, it will sport subtle badging to differentiate itself. The new xDrive model will exclusively feature an eight-speed automatic transmission, foregoing the beloved manual gearbox.

Adding all-wheel drive is expected to make this new M2 variant slightly heavier—likely close to 3,900 pounds. However, the trade-off is clear: significantly improved traction that promises faster acceleration. Given the rear-drive M2 already hits 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, the AWD model will undoubtedly shave crucial tenths off this time.

Power increases haven’t been confirmed, but there’s speculation BMW might boost output closer to the upcoming M2 CS’s anticipated 500 horsepower. Despite this possibility, the M2 xDrive reportedly won’t carry BMW’s coveted “Competition” branding, usually reserved for higher-output, performance-focused models.

Fortunately for traditionalists, the arrival of the M2 xDrive won’t signal the end of the classic manual, rear-wheel-drive experience. BMW remains committed to offering enthusiasts the original formula alongside this new variant, providing the best of both worlds.
