The 2024 BMW i5 enters the electric sedan market with high expectations, following the success of its electrified siblings, the i4 and i7. With sleek styling and advanced technology, the i5 boasts impressive features such as BMW’s iDrive 8.5 infotainment system and a futuristic curved display that dominates the cabin. The vehicle is available in three variants: the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40, the dual-motor xDrive40, and the high-performance M60 xDrive. Despite these innovations, the i5’s reception has been lukewarm among experts.
From a performance standpoint, the i5 doesn’t disappoint on paper. The eDrive40 achieves a respectable 5.1-second sprint to 60 mph, while the M60 rockets from 0 to 60 in just 3.4 seconds, thanks to its 593 horsepower. Both models deliver solid real-world range close to their EPA estimates and fast-charging capability with speeds up to 215 kW. However, these stats haven’t been enough to win unanimous praise.
Critics have highlighted issues with the M60’s driving dynamics. While its acceleration is thrilling, its suspension struggles to match the car’s power, leading to less-than-stellar handling during spirited driving. The eDrive40, on the other hand, is seen as the better-balanced option, offering a smoother and more enjoyable driving experience. Yet, even with these merits, the i5 has been overshadowed by competitors such as the Mercedes EQE and Genesis Electrified G80, which offer similarly compelling packages.
The interior design has also sparked mixed reactions. Some reviewers admire its luxurious appeal and modern features, while others find the combination of materials and design elements disjointed. BMW’s iDrive system, a central feature of the i5, has also divided opinions, with many struggling to embrace its user interface.
Ultimately, the BMW i5 delivers impressive performance and technology but falls short of the cohesive excellence seen in its predecessors. With strong contenders in the electric sedan segment, the i5 faces stiff competition and has struggled to stand out in the crowd.
