2024 BMW i5 M60: Power That Stays in a Straight Line

The 2024 BMW i5 M60 xDrive delivers impressive speed and power but falls short in handling, which could leave enthusiasts wanting more from a car with the “M” badge. With 593 horsepower and 586 lb-ft of torque, this electric sedan blasts from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. It’s a quick, exhilarating experience, especially with launch control adding drama to the ride. But is that enough to make this performance model stand out from the rest of the i5 lineup?

Although the i5 M60 excels in straight-line acceleration, its handling raises questions. Testing showed that the car’s substantial weight, nearly 5,300 pounds, creates challenges in corners. Even with the Dynamic Handling package, which adds features like Active Roll Stabilization and rear steering, the car struggles to maintain consistency. The difference in performance between the standard suspension and the upgraded Dynamic Handling pack was noticeable, shaving time off laps but still highlighting the car’s weight as a limiting factor.

BMW’s choice of tyres also affects the M60’s performance. The eco-focused tyres, shared with the less powerful i5 eDrive40, prioritize range over grip, sacrificing handling performance for efficiency. The result is a car that excels on highways but falters on twisty roads, making the driving experience inconsistent when pushing the car to its limits.

Range and charging capabilities are strong points for the i5 M60, with an EPA-rated 240 miles of range and the ability to charge from 5% to 80% in just 27 minutes using a 350-kilowatt DC charger. However, despite its impressive straight-line speed and decent range, the i5 M60 leaves drivers questioning whether the extra motor and power are worth it compared to the i5 eDrive40, which offers better balance and range for everyday driving.

Ultimately, the i5 M60’s sheer speed might appeal to some, but it doesn’t fully deliver on the promise of being an ultimate driving machine. It’s a powerful luxury sedan with straight-line thrills, but those looking for true “M” performance in the corners might find themselves better suited to a different model.
