The 2024 i5 xDrive40 and 540i xDrive Arrive in the US

BMW stands at the forefront of the luxury electric vehicle revolution. This commitment to electrification is evident with the 2024 BMW i5 xDrive40. BMWBLOG first hinted at this exciting addition to the 5 Series lineup, and it’s now officially confirmed. The i5 xDrive40 provides a compelling option, neatly slotting between the i5 eDrive40 and the sportier i5 M60 xDrive.

While technical specifics for the i5 xDrive40 remain unknown, it’s expected to be similar to the i4 xDrive40. The i4 impresses with 396 horsepower from dual electric motors and instant 443 lb-ft of torque. Both i4 and i5 eDrive40 models share 335 hp, with the i4 at 317 lb-ft of torque and the i5 eDrive40 at 295 lb-ft. It remains to be seen if there will be any differences in the xDrive models.

In a surprising turn, BMW also unveiled the 550e xDrive, a plug-in hybrid model previously unconfirmed for the US market. This hybrid offering provides new versatility for BMW enthusiasts. These additions broaden the 5 Series range, though they are unavailable for configuration.

Excitingly, BMW USA has promised even more to look forward to in the near future. The inline-six 540i xDrive will join the market later this year, while the 550e xDrive is slated for a spring 2024 release. In 2025, the M5 Sedan is set to become the flagship model, boasting over 700 horsepower from a plug-in hybrid setup featuring the new twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 “S68” engine. While the M5 Touring is returning, it remains uncertain whether this super wagon will be available in the United States. BMW’s electrified journey is gaining momentum, promising a dynamic and exciting future for luxury car enthusiasts.
