The BMW i8 is a revolutionary plug-in hybrid supercar with a mid-engine design. It was first unveiled in 2009 and made its way to production in 2014 with a carbon fibre body. The i8 isn’t the most powerful or fastest car in its price range, but it has electric power.
It has a total output of 369 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, driving all four wheels. The mid-engine layout of the i8 gives it balanced handling and a driving experience, unlike front-engine alternatives.
The BMW i8 has a top speed of around 250 km/h and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in about 4.4 seconds. It was the first hybrid/EV to utilise a two-speed transmission for its front electric motor. The i8 was designed to be fuel efficient, but it didn’t meet BMW’s expectations. However, it is still more efficient than most supercars and can achieve 35 MPGe. The latest version of the i8 can travel up to 22 miles on electric power alone, thanks to its front electric motor.
The i8’s exterior is stunning with its scissor doors and sleek lines, but the interior has been criticized for being too basic and using materials from cheaper BMW models. It has a sustainable design with unique materials and a minimalist approach.
