BMW iNext will be the Brand Flagship in 2021

Since the introduction of the BMW i3 and i8, there has not been much activity in the BMWi sub-brand. Sources say that enthusiasts will have to wait quite a while for the next innovative i model because that will not be released until 2021. Here’s an update on a possible next flagship model called iNext.

BMW iNext

Bloomberg reports that BMW is actually challenged by the electric mobility activity by Tesla Motors Inc. The competitor will have a new electric car model by 2021 and people are already excited for it. After that, Audi and Mercedes-Benz also plan to roll out their own long-range electric vehicles. Thus, BMW is pressed for time and they need to maintain their position as the leader in electric mobility.

Tesla is also planning to take on the mainstream luxury-car market with the Model 3 next year. As an answer, BMW is bringing out their next big thing: the iNext. This will be based on the 7-Series sedan as the brand’s flagship model. It is expected to launch eight years after introducing the BMW i3, which happened in 2013.

According to BMW, the iNext will be the “new innovation driver, with autonomous driving, digital connectivity, intelligent lightweight design, a totally new interior and ultimately bringing the next generation of electro-mobility to the road.” This was said by Chief Executive Officer Harald Krueger at the annual shareholders meeting of the century old company. Krueger says: “We have always stressed that our centenary is a springboard to the future.”

This upcoming model will definitely be a statement to the world that BMW is the leader in the luxury-car market. They are willing an able to maintain this position regardless of changing consumer tastes and racing challenges. BMW is not only being challenged by Tesla, there’s also word that Apple Inc. may be in it as well.

Due to the lack of new models in the span of 8 years for the BMW i, the i3’s sales is expected to be sluggish as the excitement of customers slowly fades away.
