[VIDEO] BMW iX xDrive40 hits 124 mph in Top Speed Attempt

The BMW iX xDrive40 has less power than the xDrive50 and the M60, but it’s no wimp either. It does 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds, which is impressive for an electric vehicle the size of the moon. Sure, it’s not as fast as a sports car, but it has the convenience and comfort of a huge and luxurious SUV packed with technology.

During the evening, it was put through its paces on a busy German highway. The YouTuber Cars on Autobahn used a programme based on GPS to calculate the actual speed of the vehicle and closely monitor the speed of the electric SUV. Therefore, there are small variations between the display of the vehicle’s digital speedometer and the display of the smartphone.

The BMW iX xDrive40 is not the best car for speeding along the Autobahn and its sections without a speed limit. The BMW iX xDrive40 only reached 124 mph (200 km/h) due to an electrical limit. On the other hand, the top-of-the-range M60 model can reach 155 mph (250 km/h) with the more powerful xDrive50 configuration.

In addition, the iX xDrive40 is absolutely stable and amazingly quiet, even at full power and in less than ideal conditions. You might wonder how the plug-in hybrid XM, which will be launched later this year, would fare in a similar test. It too will be a massive and powerful SUV, with the V8 working in combination with an electric powertrain.

BMW has decided not to launch the entry-level model in the US, where only the xDrive50 and M60 are offered. If the brand changes its mind, it will significantly undercut the mid-range model.
