BMW iX3 Neue Klasse Leads Tech Rich Shanghai Expo25 Showcase

The spotlight in Shanghai settled on the forthcoming BMW iX3 Neue Klasse, a production battery-SUV that anchors BMW’s 5,000-square-metre exhibit and previews the brand’s next wave of electrified models for global and China-specific markets. Visitors stepped aboard an oversized mock-up of BMW Panoramic iDrive, now running Operating System X code written largely in China and featuring a windshield-wide head-up display, a curved main screen and a local AI voice assistant trained by domestic tech giants to understand regional accents and routines.

Beside the interactive wall, engineers explained how the Heart of Joy central computer, one of four new onboard “super brains”, will manage propulsion, recuperation and steering in millisecond windows, promising smoother deceleration and sharper cornering across the Neue Klasse range. BMW added heritage and individuality with two China-only specials: the BMW 3 Series 50 Years Edition in fresh paint and carbon highlights, and the BMW M4 Edition Nürburgring, limited to fifty-three units in Frozen Deep Green with crimson grille accents and track-derived hardware.

For performance buyers who prefer four doors, the long-wheelbase BMW M235L Gran Coupé stood ready with an M-tuned 2.0-litre turbo and extended rear leg-room, showing how sport and comfort coexist on China’s crowded avenues. MINI brought its colour, debuting the John Cooper Works generation alongside a classic Monte Carlo veteran and the Nürburgring-winning JCW Pro. At the same time, the open-roof Cooper Convertible greeted Chinese motorists ahead of first deliveries.

BMW’s flair for art and light rounded out the hall. Julie Mehretu’s #20 Art Car translated race-track aerodynamics into layered strokes on the M Hybrid V8, the i5 Flow NOSTOKANA shifted exterior pigments in synchrony with South African motifs, and the Concept Skytop Roadster combined targa lines with hand-finished leather to hint at future open-air grand touring. Together, these elements framed the iX3 Neue Klasse as more than another electric crossover: it is the hub of an ecosystem where smarter electronics, localised software and expressive design converge to keep sheer driving pleasure firmly on course in the battery era.
