Earlier in September, our favourite Bavarian marque officially launched the fully-electric BMW iX and BMW i4 onto the World with two global variants for each model, the BMW iX available in both xDrive50 and xDrive40 guises and the BMW i4 available in either the standard eDrive40 form or as BMW’s first-ever M-fettled EV, the M50.
Unfortunately, while the over 500bhp top of the line variants might get your synapsis zapping about all excitedly, there are currently no plans to bring them in just yet with only the xDrive40 and eDrive40 variants scheduled to make landfall in Singapore.
This isn’t really sad news because either of these cars come charged up with over 300bhp either way. The BMW iX xDrive40i receiving a healthy dose of 326bhp from its 71 kWh battery pack and the BMW i4 juiced up with an extra 14 electrified horses for a not too shabby 340bhp from its 83.9kWh battery pack.
Whilst the BMW iX might be slightly down on paper, it is actually the bigger technological marvel amongst the two being BMW’s first-ever EV SUV/SAV developed from the ground up. With an aluminium spaceframe construction reinforced with a Carbon Cage for higher rigidity minus the weight penalities.
As mentioned, only the xDrive40i has been planned for the Singapore release but perhaps if you bug the kind folks over at BMW Asia or Performance Motors enough, they might be inclined to consider releasing the xDrive50i or even the not-yet-released over 600bhp M60 variant. Yes, an M-version is coming.
That said, the base model all-wheel-drive iX xDrive40i is no slouch, with 100km/h coming up in a still fairly brisk 6.1 seconds and a very friendly range of 425km. Having already been quite impressed after driving the BMW iX3, we’re fairly certain the iX, with its ground-up EV development, will be an even better drive and overall package.

Hot on the heels of the iX is BMW’s Tesla Model 3 (and Polestar 2) fighter, the first-ever BMW i4. Equipped with a choice rear-wheel-drive drivetrain, the i4 eDrive40i inbound for our local shores pips its iX equivalent to the 100km/h mark with a 5.7 second sprint time.
While it might look like an electrified 4 Series Gran Coupe, the development of the chassis has allowed for a modular platform allowing for a mix of powerplant configurations with little compromise to the overall packaging. Coupled with a host of magical technobabble under its sleek sheet metal, the BMW i4 eDrive40i has an impressive range of 590km, beating both of its closest rivals.
