Now that the year has officially come to a close, it is time to look back to see the best and the worst-selling cars of 2017. Topping the list is Mercedes-Benz but BMW had two of the worst-selling cars of 2017: the BMW i8 and the BMW Z4.
For the BMW i8, it is not really surprising because of the hefty price tag of the car that only a select few could afford. It is also kind of a niche vehicle that will only appeal to a select few in terms of its bold design, plug-in hybrid powertrain and mid-engine supercar layout. It is also in the same price range as the Porsche 911, which makes competition tougher.
The poor sales of the BMW Z4 was also kind of expected. It is just a completely different ball game now as compared to when it was first released in 2009. It is fun to drive, yes, but going against the new Porsche 718 Boxster or the new Audi TT Roadster is also very tough.
A promising, new Z4 is on its way this year and a new X2, 3 Series and 8 Series as well. Hopefully BMW can redeem itself gracefully with these new players in the line up. From what we’ve seen so far, the chances are good.
