2 Series Gran Coupe named a contender in MT’s COTY

This 2 Series model looks so strangely different from what the BMW has traditionally been making. It comes as a front-wheel-drive based sedan mated with a transverse four-cylinder engine and front-heavy weight bias – that’s something you won’t normally find in a BMW car. However, when you strip away typical BMW features, the car reveals to be a decent little car. And these unusual features from the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is what actually made it a contender in the Motor Trend’s Car of the Year award.

Among the 2 Series Gran Coupe, the contending model variant the MT chose is the BMW M235i Gran Coupe, which is known as the sportiest version in the range. The M235i is a surprisingly quiet, agile little car and a seriously good performance car on paper. It accelerates to 60 mph in just 5 seconds. It also reveals a remarkable all-wheel-drive grip, providing a ton of lateral g-force, which is quite fast around a test track.

The BMW M235i Gran Coupe in this contest captivated some of MT’s staffers a lot more than we expected. Its performance, four-cylinder engine noise, and overall handling balance particularly impressed the watchers. While its ugly styling and brittle ride left an unpleasant impression.

M235i Gran Coupe’s downfall will be its feel and excitement factor. It significantly lacks engagement and entertainment for the drivers despite being an impressive car. Technically, it is quite good driving fast yet most likely feels just like an impressive simulation. So, the 2er might have the groove into the competition but it has no certainty in winning the trophy. Still, being in the game is already impressive for the 2 Series Gran Coupe model.
