3er and 7er Axles to be used by 2017 BMW 5 Series

Production will end for the F10 BMW 5 Series this October and a new G30 model will be revealed soon. Seeking to improve from the features of the predecessor, BMW is expected to add a lot of changes in the design and features of this new car, including the axles. As cars get lighter and lighter, the heavy BMW 5 Series is also going to that direction.

3er and 7er Axles to be used by 2017 BMW 5 Series

The 5 Series is known to be one of the heaviest models in its segment. Though very powerful, weight did affect its ability to impress enthusiasts. There were quite a few disappointing reviews for the M5 because it was overweight. BMW had to solve that with proper re-engineering.

The new 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series will be using the Cluster Architecture (CLAR) modular platform also known as ’35up’. This decision will make it possible for BMW engineers to utilize lightweight materials and using the parts of the other models made in the cluster architecture.

That being said, there is a high chance that the parts used in the 5 Series will be a hybrid between the 3 Series and 7 Series. Decisions of which ones to use will depend on the specific model.

BMWBLog reports information from an inside source which revealed that the entry-level 5 Series cars will be using the same front axles as the future G20 3 Series to reduce weight. This will allow the 520i and 520d models to weigh just a little bit more than the 320i and 320d brothers. On the high end 540d and M550i models, they will be adopting the same axles as the current 7 Series. The high end ones will also have the Dynamic Drive option which will be seen for the first time on the 5 Series. Dynamic Drive stabilizes on the front and rear axles to prevent the vehicle’s tendency to roll in a corner. This decision will give the 5 Series much needed balance and weight savings.
