Since the E65 7 Series, the latest generation of BMW 4 Series is probably the most contested BMW. It’s because of its GT-like driving performance and that massive grille design. However, the new BMW 4 Series surely has quite an advantage against its rivals as it comes back with the latest full-packed features. Auto Express leads the way in comparing it to some of its rivals. The team aims to test whether these advantages would be sufficient to surpass its debated styling and knock down its rivals.
The new BMW 4 Series challenges the Audi A5 and the Lexus RC in this test. These two were considered as the biggest contenders of the 4ers in the segment. What we have missed in this challenge is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. But we somehow understand knowing that there are necessary processes in scheduling these cars.
In this test, all challengers are equipped with the four-cylinder engines. In other words, the BMW 4 Series gets a 420i, the Audi A5 a’40’ TFSI, and the Lexus with an RC 300h. The test shows that Audi is the most powerful with 201 horsepower. This power is against the 181 horsepower of both the 4 Series and the Lexus. With an eight-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox, the BMW 4 Series competes with the Audi with its dual-clutch seven-speed and a CVT for Lexus. Lexus stands out somehow with its hybrid engine.
The results of the tests show Audi A5 as the fastest car as it is the lightest and most powerful. From zero to 62 mph, the Audi can sprint in just 7.1 seconds. As for the 4 Series and Lexus, both gain a record of 7.5 seconds. Nevertheless, the BMW 4 Series gains the sportiest character and most comfortable to drive with. Despite the visual impediment, Auto Express was able to display how the 4 Series competes well.
