BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Discontinued Amid i4’s Growing Demand

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe has reached the end of its petrol-powered journey in Australia, with production for the region ceasing earlier this year. This marks a shift in BMW’s lineup, driven by the surging popularity of the electric i4, which has firmly outpaced its petrol counterpart in sales.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe, a sleek four-door variant of the 4 Series coupe, originally served as a stylish alternative to the 3 Series sedan. However, changing consumer preferences have led to its decline. Following the discontinuation of the entry-level 420i variant in 2023, BMW phased out the remaining 430i and M440i xDrive models in 2024. The company cited customer demand and the introduction of numerous new models as reasons for reshaping its product offerings.

BMW’s focus has shifted to the fully electric i4, which retains the Gran Coupe’s distinct body style. The electric model has gained significant traction, with sales skyrocketing over the past year. The eDrive 35 variant has been particularly successful, accounting for a substantial share of i4 sales and even surpassing competitors like the Polestar 2. The i4’s strong performance underscores BMW’s commitment to electric mobility.

Since its debut in 2014, the 4 Series Gran Coupe has achieved notable sales milestones, but its numbers pale in comparison to the enduring popularity of the 3 Series. As of 2024, European reports suggest no successor is planned for the petrol Gran Coupe. Instead, the electric i4 is expected to evolve, potentially transitioning to BMW’s advanced Neue Klasse platform by 2028, signalling the brand’s dedication to a sustainable future.
