The new BMW 4 Series family has a new crown jewel– the M440i xDrive. This sporty-looking coupe claims itself as the liaison itself to the M4 Coupe. But the rear-wheel drive version of the M440i might come a little later and patrons might have to wait a little more. The market launch to happen on October 2020 will bring only the M440i xDrive model, according to BMW’s engineering team. Today, though, we’re excited to learn that the rear-wheel drive version of the BMW M440i will launch on March 2021.
As of the moment, its specs are not yet revealed, but we know for sure that it will feature the same powertrain as the xDrive unit, sans the additional weight. The well-anticipated BMW M440i is propelled by the B58 3.0 liter turbocharged I6 with 382 horsepower (374 hp for Europe) and 369 lb-ft of torque. Also, the OPF system that slightly reduces the car’s power and impacts the acoustics will be included in the European M440i model.
Furthermore, M440i takes a turn by getting a 48-volt electrical system which makes it a MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle). This then becomes an edge for all the 4 Series fitted with the 48-volt MHEV system: utilizing the BMW’s Brake Energy Regeneration to recoup energy from braking back into the 48-volt battery. Thus, said energy can assist the 12-volt system or be used for other functions.
Depending on the selected combination of the wheel and tire, the M440i xDrive Coupe can reach an electronically limited maximum speed of 155 mph or 130 mph and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds. It will be a similar performance with the rear-wheel drive M440i.
A few other four-cylinder models are expected to be released in addition to the BMW M440i. For starters, there’s the BMW 420i Coupe (135 kW/ 184 hp and 300 Nm/221 lb-ft of torque) and the BMW 420d (140 kW/ 190 hp and 400 Nm/295 lb-ft of torque)–both gasoline and diesel, respectively, thanks to their 2.0 liter turbo-fours.
With the new 430i and 430i xDrive coupe also comes with an an updated B46 2.0-liter 4-cylinder BMW TwinPower turbocharged engine delivering 255 hp @ 5,000 – 6,500 rpm (an increase of 7 hp) and 294 ft-lbs. of torque @ 1,550 – 4,400 rpm (an increase of 36 ft-lbs.).
The 430i Coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds (5.3 Seconds for 430i xDrive Coupe) and also reaches an electronically limited maximum speed of 155 mpg or 130 mph depending on the selected combination of wheel and tire. Also, later this March 2021, BMW 430d will be released and has a 3.0 liter turbocharged six-cylinder diesel. Winding up a 210 kW/286 hp and 650 Nm/479 lb-ft of torque.
The new 4 Series Coupe (using 330i and 430i for comparison) appears to be bigger in size than the 3 Series Sedan–2.2 inches longer, 1.0 inch wider. It is also 2.2 inches lower and has a 1.0 inch wider rear track while having the same wheelbase. Additionally, the new 4 Series have developed in size compared to the its previous generation 4 Series Coupe; it is 5.2 inches longer, 1.0 inch wider, 0.4 inches taller and features a 1.6 inch longer wheelbase and 1.4 inch wider front and 1.2 inch wider rear tracks.
The 2021 BMW M440i xDrive Coupe in the US will sell for $58,500. Excluding the $995 Destination. Expectantly, the rear-wheel drive M440i will be slightly cheaper.
