BMW 540i xDrive: A Smooth Ride with Subtle Surprises

Getting to know a new car is exciting, but only after spending more time does the true character begin to show. In the case of the BMW 540i xDrive, the first impressions were filled with admiration for its silky inline-six engine. Producing a solid 375 horsepower, this powertrain moves the 540i from 0 to 60 mph in a quick 4.0 seconds. The seamless pairing of the eight-speed automatic transmission further enhances the driving experience, with barely noticeable and surprisingly efficient shifts, achieving an impressive 37 mpg on the highway.

Just as we became fond of the 540i, a 2024 Mercedes-Benz E450 entered, offering a fresh perspective. Suddenly, the BMW felt bulkier, with a slightly more enclosed cabin. While both cars offer a smooth ride, the Benz’s adaptive dampers provide a more adaptable setup, particularly for rougher roads.

Despite its agility, the 540i’s steering feels lighter than expected, and the handling can sometimes seem a bit disconnected. Still, the turbocharged engine is a standout, and the interior is tastefully designed with plenty of space for rear passengers and excellent comfort up front. However, the digital gauge cluster could be more intuitive, and the infotainment system takes some time.

Ultimately, the 540i xDrive shines more as a luxurious cruiser than a sporty sedan, leaning towards the refinement of a smaller 7-series rather than a big 3-series.
