BMW, Audi and Daimler form 5G Automotive Association

BMW, Audi and Daimler AG have been competing with each other for decades. They have created and sold their own cars in the market. The future, however, requires that they work together to achieve common goals. Recently, they have recently worked together to acquire the HERE mapping company and this is expected to benefit them tremendously. The collaboration has not stopped there. The same set of automakers teamed up with Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, Nokia and Qualcomm Incorporated, all next generation mobile communication companies, to launch the 5G Automotive Association.

The 5G Automotive Association will help develop, test and promote communications solutions and make it faster for these innovations to be accessed by the general market. Working together, they can achieve greater things in a faster way. The association will work around technical and regulatory issues and leverage next generation mobile networks and integrating vehicle platforms with connectivity.

If the future of cars is great, so is the future of mobile communication, and the automakers recognize that. They need to forge relationships with mobile communication companies because of how much drivers and passengers use mobile phones and how they love to integrate them with their cars. It is useful for automakers to build good relationships and lay groundwork with next generation mobile networks who are expected to handle much more data volume.

5G is especially interesting because it can better support mission-critical communications for safer driving. This endeavor is a huge step towards road safety and connected mobility of the future. It will support enhanced vehicle-to-everything communications and connected mobility solutions by connecting more devices, reducing latency and being more reliable.

Christoph Voigt has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Board and Dino Flore is Director General of the Association. The 5G Automotive Association will be working closely with the European Connected & Automated Driving Pre-Deployment Project, and other regional and national initiatives.
