Twin Anniversary for BMW at the Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort

BMW is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. There is also another celebration: it has been 50 years since the BMW 02-Series was launched to the public. To celebrate the occasion, a special race was held at the Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort last September 2, 3 and 4. The event is called: “BMW Centenary Trophy: BMW 2002 meets BMW 3.0 CSL”.

This is an interesting event because it mixes both BMW and motor sport. That is actually the identity of the BMW 02 Series. When it was launched in 1966, it quickly gained popularity, thanks to a lot of motor-sport successes.

The “BMW Centenary Trophy: BMW 2002 meets BMW 3.0 CSL” event is basically a race between the BMW 2002 and the BMW 3.0 CSL, an equally popular and high performing car. Around twenty-five racing cars will be on the starting line. Seventeen of them are 2002 automobiles.

To grace the event, BMW also invited some motor-sport legends. Prinz Leopold von Bayern, Harald Grohs, Jan Lammers and Michael Bleekemolen will be there and aptly so as iconic drivers. Adrian van Hooydonk, the Senior Vice President BMW Group Design and project manager who worked on the two BMW hommage cars, is also competing in his own BMW 2002 TISA. He has already driven this car at the Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort.
