Even without the M Badge, the 2016 BMW 340i is the fastest in the 3 Series family today. It is powered by a new 3-liter straight six engine that delivers incredible speeds in seriously short periods of time. The Fast Lane Car wanted to know if this will still be true in not so easy conditions, like 1 mile high above sea level. See what happened on the test track, here:
This is a trademark test because cars usually perform differently at high altitudes. The rarefied air just makes it difficult to do so. However, BMW is somewhat prepared for this when they make cars. In fact, a brand new BMW X6 M recently tested even posted a better figure than the manufacturer claims.
The BMW 340i used for this test was fitted with the 8-speed automatic gearbox and the xDrive all-wheel drive system. BMW says it should reach 60 mph from a standstill in 4.7 seconds on sea level. At an altitude of roughly 5,280 feet, it can drastically change.
The results? Well, it was quite impressive at 4.8 seconds, without even using launch control. It definitely held up to its claims!
