BMW is setting the stage for a groundbreaking transformation with its first all-electric M3, anticipated to debut in 2027. Potentially named the BMW iM3, this innovative model marks a significant leap in the M division’s legacy, blending electrification with performance. Based on the Neue Klasse platform, it promises to redefine the super-saloon category by introducing cutting-edge technology and unparalleled driving dynamics.
The heavily camouflaged prototype, first glimpsed last year, suggests an exciting evolution of the 3 Series design. Featuring a wider track, enhanced aerodynamics, and aggressive bodywork, the electric M3 prototype hints at a bold departure from its combustion-powered counterpart. Its quad-motor setup is expected to deliver a level of precision and power reminiscent of hypercars, setting it apart from other electric saloons.
BMW has invested significantly in its Neue Klasse platform, equipping the iM3 with a state-of-the-art ECU integrating powertrain, stability control, and chassis dynamics into one cohesive system. This “hand of god” technology, as BMW’s M division calls it, will optimise handling and performance, offering drivers an unmatched blend of control and excitement on both track and road. Dynamic recuperation and seamless braking are just some of the features that showcase the platform’s potential.
While the petrol-powered M3 will remain available for enthusiasts, the iM3 aims to carve its niche in the performance EV market. Frank van Meel, head of BMW’s M division, has emphasised the importance of vehicle dynamics over raw power, ensuring the iM3 delivers a signature driving experience that rivals cannot easily replicate. Driver engagement remains a focal point, with BMW exploring innovative ways to simulate haptic and acoustic feedback to enhance the thrill of driving.
As BMW prepares to unleash the iM3, it faces competition from electric counterparts like the Tesla Model 3 Performance and Alfa Romeo’s electric Giulia. However, with its unparalleled engineering and innovative features, the iM3 is set to raise the bar for performance electric vehicles, paving the way for the next chapter of the ultimate driving machine.
