BMW has been commemorating 50 years of its M performance line all through 2022. There have been celebrations worldwide in recent months to honour the achievement, and the Canadian branch of the manufacturer was not going to be left out. The Toronto area’s Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex recently played host to the world premiere of the new M2.
A new film features the G87, which made its debut around town in a unique Zandvoort Blue finish. BMW chose to feature the tiny M vehicle with the carbon fibre roof and two-tone wheels available as options (930 M). The traditional Motorsport roundel that German automaker Volkswagen offers all year for M Sport and M automobiles was, of course, present on the second-generation M2.
BMW Canada provided a pre-production prototype featuring an eight-speed automatic transmission, unlike prior M2 unveilings. Carbon bucket seats cost more than M Sport seats but lost 11 kg on the smallest M vehicle. The G87 is 104 mm longer and 33 mm broader than before, despite appearances. Front and rear track widths have been expanded by 38 mm and 4 mm to match M4s.
When it debuts on sale in Canada in 2023, BMW’s base model will cost 76,500 CAD. The F87 generation was constructed in Leipzig, Germany; the M2 will be produced in San Luis Potos, Mexico.
