Undoubtedly, the new BMW M2 proves its dominance in drag races, despite the polarizing opinions on its design. Sporting a sleek Sapphire Black appearance, the G87 variant is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It faced off against similarly sized high-performance cars in a series of drag and rolling races, followed by a brake test. Notably, it’s worth mentioning that among the contenders, only the compact M model boasts a torque-converter gearbox. Meanwhile, the other three feature dual-clutch automatic transmissions.
One may argue that having all-wheel drive gives the Mercedes-AMG A45 S and Audi RS3 Sportback an advantage over the BMW M2 and Porsche 718 Boxster GTS, which only drive their rear wheels. There are also suspicions that the baby M will get an xDrive version. However, according to what we’ve heard, it won’t happen until 2026. That inline-six sends the 460 horses to the rear till then.
The BMW is the most powerful vehicle in the group, followed by the AMG. It has 421 horsepower, and the Porsche and Audi, which each have 400 horsepower. The M2 is by far the heaviest, although possibly the strongest. With a weight of 1,725 kg, it weighs quite a bit more than the Porsche (1,435 kg). The sporty hatchbacks have comparable weights of 1,570 kg for the RS3 and 1,550 kg for the A45 S.
Despite its additional weight and the presence of a torque-converter gearbox, the M2 emerged victorious in every drag and rolling race. The only slight defeat occurred in the brake test, where the RS3 managed to stop slightly earlier at 100 mph. The upcoming release of the automatic-only M2 CS in 2025, expected to boast 518 horsepower, will further enhance the vehicle’s speed. If an M2 xDrive variant materializes, the G87 will become an even more formidable pocket rocket. Excitingly, an M2 xDrive is already in the works.
