In the BMW community, it is a sin to imply that the E46 M3 CSL is inferior to another BMW. But the E92 M3 GTS carries some superior components compared to the M3 CSL.
The iconic M3 CSL carries a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated inline-six engine. This produces 360 horsepower. It is an excellent engine that generates 100 horsepower per liter. It creates smooth engine revs and a nice metallic sound. On the other hand, the E92 M3 GTS’s engine is a higher version of the M3’s V8 engine. It is naturally aspirated and generates 444 horsepower.
The GTS’s engine revs higher than the CSL’s despite having two extra cylinders. It revs at a stratospheric 8,300 rpm. Also, GTS has the V8’s high-revving nature and Inconel/titanium exhaust. That is why it sounds even better than the M3 CSL. Therefore, the E92 M3 GTS is not only more powerful but also more fun to drive
Both vehicles were initially sold as automatic-only vehicles. But the BMW CSL had numerous alterations over the years. Still, the E92’s seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is incomparable compared to M3 CSL’s six-speed SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox). Shifting is much faster. It drives smoothly on the road. It also performs well in automatic mode. More importantly, it’s more fun to use.
The interior of the E46 M3 CSL has carbon fiber pieces. It has a carbon roof and an innovative E46 Series design. It looks fairly good. However, the E92 M3 has six-point Recaro racing seats and a roll cage. It even has the best clockfaces a bimmer can have.
In conclusion, the E92 M3 GTS carries superior components. Even against the legendary E46 M3 CSL. Does this indicate that the M3 GTS is a better car? Not really. Fantastic cars are always much more than the sum of their parts.
