Famed Italian motorcyclist Valentino Rossi marked a remarkable feat in his BMW M driving career. At his local Misano event in the GT World Challenge Europe’s (GTWC) second Sprint Cup round, Rossi snagged his first GTWC win. This victory crowns his car racing journey so far. Teaming with Belgian Maxime Martin, Rossi showed invincible skill in Sunday’s sweltering one-hour race. The BMW M Team WRT and Rossi also toasted a class win in the Gold Cup category, adding more podium finishes.
Rossi’s landmark Misano victory was met with fanfare as supporters lauded the iconic Italian racer. They witnessed their hero achieve his grandest car racing win yet. Although Rossi had bagged his maiden four-wheel victory at the “Road to Le Mans” weeks before, the GTWC Europe championship win against top GT racers undoubtedly tops it.
Martin laid the groundwork with a third-place qualifying finish, but Rossi took the spotlight. He clocked fast laps, seizing the lead and the race victory. Notably, Dirk Müller and Martin previously clinched a GTWC Sprint Cup win eight years ago, driving a BMW Z4 GT3.
BMW M Team WRT had more to celebrate on Sunday beyond the main win. Belgian racers Dries Vanthoor and Charles Weerts staged an incredible comeback on Saturday, climbing from 21st to third. However, despite starting Sunday’s race in pole position, a pit stop mishap dropped them to ninth.
Joining Rossi and Martin on the podium were the French pair Thomas Neubauer and Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer. The team gains an admirable third place. After their second place on Saturday, Niklas Krütten from Germany and Calan Williams from Australia clinched the Gold Cup on Sunday.
