After a nine-year absence, BMW Group Classic is back at the Le Mans Classic with an extraordinary contender. Built to meet Group 4 regulations, the iconic BMW M1 race car driven by Leopold of Bavaria, Christian Danner, and Peter Oberndorfer during the 1981 endurance race will again roar across the renowned circuit. This remarkable reunion will witness the same trio competing in the same car on the same track.
In a symbolic gesture to complete the circle of history, the three legendary drivers gathered for a special photoshoot today. The drivers gathered to reenact the photo session from June 3, 1981, in front of Munich’s Spatenhaus an der Oper restaurant. In the lead-up to the globally renowned 24-hour race on June 13-14 of that year, this heartfelt recreation unfolded. This ambitious endeavour, is a collaborative effort by BMW Group Classic, BMW Motorsport, and BMW France. It aims to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Le Mans race.
Alongside the legendary race car, they will bring other iconic BMW contenders to the Circuit de la Sarthe. Jeff Koons’ mesmerizing M3 GT2 Art Car from 2010 will grace the event, solidifying BMW’s rich history at Le Mans. This year’s Le Mans Classic promises to be a thrilling spectacle. Scheduled between June 29 and July 2, enthusiasts and racing aficionados will witness a remarkable display of automotive history. BMW Motorsport has ambitious plans for the future.
They gear up to compete in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the French circuit next year with the M Hybrid V8. The stakes are high, as the 25th anniversary of the V12 LMR’s triumph at Le Mans approaches. As a testament to BMW’s enduring legacy, the M1 will simultaneously compete in the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship this year.
