[Video] Lightning Lap 2021 Highlights the BMW M8 Competition

There are a lot of BMWs to look into their footage this week as the Car and Driver began posting their trademark Lighting Lap videos. The wildest BMW you can purchase today is the M8 Competition. However, it may be a bit on the heavy side. But it’s still expected to be the fastest car you can drive today from Munich as it performs quite well on track.

At the Virginia International Raceway, the Lighting Laps are shot on the typical Car and Driver proving grounds. This is a good factor as it lets us compare times against other cars. BMW M8 Competition did well on the track this year even though it is not the fastest car. It behaved excellently, despite its near 2-ton weight. It delivers a power to match and even finer than we expect.

Just like the other BMW M range models, the M8 Competition today gains the well-known 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 S63 engine under its hood. BMW claims that it generates 625 HP and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque. The four corners of the car receive the power of an 8-speed automatic gearbox combined with the M xDrive all-wheel drive system.

On that count the M8 Competition’s lap time record was 2:55.45 in the Lightning Lap 2021. This result makes BMW M8 Competition the eight fastest car in this year’s contest. It’s 5 seconds behind the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 and slower than the Taycan Turbo S (2:55.2). Car and Driver confirms that the M5 Competition was impressive because it was faster on the same track last year. Comparison goes on between the M8 vs M5.
