Choices vary if you are in the market for a fast, large, and four-door coupe. There are three great cars to choose from in the segment, and all of them came from premium German automakers. The BMW M8 Gran Coupe, Audi RS7 Sportback, and Mercedes-AMG GT63 S. All cars mentioned have the same monstrous V8 engines, four-door bodies, and impressive luxurious cabins. However, which one is the best pick? Car and Driver went through a comparison test with the three vehicles going head-to-head-to-head, and the results are indeed surprising.
Spec sheets for the BMW M8 Gran Coupe, Audi RS7 Sportback, and Mercedes-AMG GT63 S have many in common. All cars come packed with big twin-turbocharged V8 engines that make about 600 horsepower. The Audi RS7 is the least powerful, generating 591 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque with its 4.0-liter V8 engine. While the BMW M8 comes second, with 617 horsepower and 553 lb-ft from a 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8. The AMG then takes the lead with 630 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque from a 4.0-liter V8 engine. All three cars have all-wheel-drives. The Audi and BMW both have eight-speed automatic transmissions, while the AMG uses a nine-speed automatic transmission.
Figures from the spec sheet played out as many expect. The AMG takes the lead, followed by the BMW M8 Gran Coupe, and leaves the Audi RS7 last. The Audi was the slowest, but it hits 3.0 seconds flat from 0-60 mph. When the most delayed car hits 60 mph in 3.0 seconds in the test, you are in a fast company. Moreover, the BMW M8 had 2.8 seconds from 0-60 mph, and the AMG with 2.6 seconds, ahead by only a few tenths.
All cars behaved differently on the tracks. The BMW M8 showcases its willingness to smoke its rear tires to pieces and impressive straight-line speed. However, the AMG with its engine rumble and superior handling and steering. It left the Audi RS7 behind, leaving the two. Which do you think aced the test?
