The BMW X5 M and X6 M offer identical exterior and interior design options. You can match everything, from paint to trim to wheels to upholstery. Yet, their external looks set them apart. It’s the main difference between the two. The X6 M flaunts large, lavish air intakes, a black rear lip spoiler, and a striking rear swoop, contrasting the more practical look of the X5 M.
The slanted fastback design of the BMW X6 M cuts into cargo space. It has 59.6 cubic feet, 12.7 cubic feet less than the X5 M’s 72.3. The X6 M also loses out on headroom and legroom, with reductions of about two inches, 1.5 inches, and half an inch. Yet, it ties with the X5 M for front-row shoulder room at 60 inches and beats it in front leg room by 0.6 inches. As a result, the X5 M is generally more practical than the X6 M.
You might think the X5 M and X6 M perform similarly, and you’d be right. Both cars share a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. This engine gives a solid 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. That is if you opt for a new or used Competition Package model. Less sporty models still pack a punch with 600 horsepower; torque remains the same. Both cars can hit a top speed of 155 mph and go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, beating our Tesla guy—unless he’s in a Plaid, which he won’t be.
The 2024 X5 M costs $122,300 when brand-new, while the X6 M costs $127,200. The X6 M offers an identical performance from the driver’s seat, although possibly weighing slightly less. For some, 123 pounds of curb weight isn’t nearly worth $5,000, but those looking for the X6 M will want it because it has a slightly higher performance ceiling. The X5 M is the undisputed option for people looking for more excellent usability. You won’t be disappointed by any choice, which is surprisingly simple.
