The 2024 X5 M Performance now sports the M60i tag. However, it’s not nearing the exclusive X5 M Competition. This luxury SUV retains its power, even with a new engine. Swapping the N63, the X5 M50i now houses a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 (S68). It delivers a consistent 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque.
Bimmer Today tested the 5,355-pound SUV’s speed in North American specs. They clocked its 0-124 mph acceleration using its maximum power. Next, they gauged its pace from 62 mph to 124 mph.
Though the sprints weren’t timed, the X5 M60i’s acceleration impressed. The new electric motor and the eight-speed Steptronic gearbox provide a temporary boost. Despite the unchanged combustion engine power, it contributes an extra 12 horsepower and 147 lb-ft of torque.
The V8 consumes a lot when pushed hard, which is expected. Watching the digital instrument cluster, the range drops fast during quick acceleration. However, BMW says the new 48V system improves the X5 M60i’s fuel efficiency. It also ensures a sharper response when you press the accelerator hard.
Adding an e-motor boosts both performance and fuel efficiency. It also helps BMW meet strict emissions standards, especially in the European Union. Expect the next X5 M Performance to feature more electrification, possibly with an inline-six. With the 5 Series dropping its V8, only next year’s M5 will boast eight cylinders.
