BMW’s journey into the electric performance realm redefines what enthusiasts expect from the M division. While current offerings like the i5 M60 and i7 M70 fall under the M Performance lineup, they’re just a prelude to what’s coming. In a behind-the-scenes video, BMW M’s Head of Overall Vehicle Development, Carsten Wolf, revealed that future M electric cars will all feature a quad-motor setup. This advanced configuration is set to deliver extraordinary performance capabilities and innovative features that push the boundaries of what’s possible in electric vehicles. Prototypes based on the i4 M50 have been rigorously tested to bring this vision closer to reality, with these models serving as a foundation for BMW’s all-electric M future.

The showcased prototype is far from ordinary. Although it retains the familiar silhouette of the i4 M50, it incorporates major upgrades, including four motors, carbon-ceramic brakes, reinforced structural elements, and enhanced subframes for improved stability and control. However, BMW’s commitment to innovation comes with challenges. During testing, engineers faced unexpected issues, such as an AC compressor problem that required extensive troubleshooting and even a motor replacement. This transparency highlights BMW’s dedication to perfecting its electric M models before they reach production.

As anticipation builds for the first fully electric M car, slated for release later this decade, BMW is also planning to maintain its combustion engine legacy with a new generation of the inline-six M3.
