BMW Motorsport will be showing off more than just the BMW M4 DTM cars racing this 2016 DTM season. They will also be led by the BMW M4 GTS as the race’s official DTM Safety Car. This is part of BMW Motorsport’s commitment to securing the safety of races.

In order to fulfil its duty, the DTM Safety Car needs to be built with the demands of the job in mind. DTM rules and regulations say that the DTM safety car needs to be specifically designed and adapted to deliver high-performance driving on race circuits. It is absolutely necessary that it has enough power to maintain the speeds of the other racing vehicles, or else, it will not be able to perform the job well. The presence of the DTM Safety Car must never impair the racing capabilities of the participants. In short, the car needs to be qualified in itself for the race and more. It will be working with the inter alia, the tyres and brake systems of the racing cars and it needs to be within an ideal temperature range.

The BMW M4 GTS in production version already fulfils these requirements, which makes it an ideal car for the job. It is powered by the award-winning, 3.0-litre engine with an innovative water injection technology. Engine power output was increased by 51 kW/69 hp to 368 kW/500 hp. Maximum torque was also increased from 550 Nm to 600 Nm. 0-100 is achieved in 3.8 seconds. Top speed is 305 km/h (limited). Thus, the BMW M4 GTS (ECE kerb weight: 1,585 kg, power to weight ratio: 3.0 kg/hp) lightweight architecture makes it the most agile, radical and best-handling model in the BMW M line up.

For the mandatory safety features, the car is wearing the optional Clubsport Package which is already available for the BMW M4 GTS at no extra cost. This includes an Acid Orange roll bar located behind the front seats, 6-point seat belts especially adapted for racing and a fire extinguisher. To complete the look, the car just needed a LED safety car light system installed plus DTM Safety Car stickers and a radio installation.
