Is this a BMW M5 xDrive Touring?

Spy photos and videos of the new G30 BMW 5 Series has started to come in. We now know that there will be both standard sedan and touring variants, aside from the full-on M5. There is also a possibility of having an all-wheel drive option for the upcoming BMW M5. This would definitely help manage all the power delivered by the engine. Could there really be a potential BMW M5 xDrive Touring? And is this a spotting of it testing?

It is less likely though that the all-wheel drive option for the M5 will be called xDrive. The one fitted to the M5 is most likely dormant and gives the driver the same feeling of being on a rear-wheel drive. It will only start intervening when there’s added performance. However, it is best to use this term for now since no one really knows yet what it is going to be called.

Hard core M enthusiasts may not like the idea of an all-wheel drive M5. It may not feel right, but it actually makes perfect sense with the 600 horsepower or more that this car is going to have. It just makes for better handling and overall performance. One important thing to note is that it is not a mandatory feature.

In fact, competitors have already thought of this. Both the Mercedes-AMG E63 Estate and the Audi RS6 Avant have AWD options. With the introduction of all-wheel drive, there’s also this possibility of eventually having a M5 wagon – a successor of the E61 M5 Touring. BMW has not expressed intent in prioritising practicality over performance but who knows? It may happen.

There is a very small string of hope that a BMW M5 xDrive Touring will happen, to be honest. However, let’s see where the German automaker next steers the boat.
