BMW Pick-Up Truck Idea Has Not Died

In April Fools’ Day five years ago, BMW released what many enthusiasts believed to be a very successful joke. The German Automaker said that they will be launching a BMW M3 Pick-up Truck. They even went as far as testing the vehicle in Nurburgring, where it showed off its dynamic potential.

When people started to see the pick-up truck, many actually started to entertain the idea. It was in fact well received. The moment BMW revealed that it was only a joke, the bosses were clear that they do not plan to create such a model. Fast-forward a few years later, is the decision still the same?

In a talk with Australia’s Motoring, Australian Marketing Manager Marc Werner said that BMW is actually now seriously thinking about a truck idea. “Never say never,” Werner told Motoring. “We’re watching the space closely.”

According to the same source, Werner’s statements may be a signal of BMW’s change of plans because it’s the exact opposite of what BMW Asia, Pacific, and South Africa boss Hendrik von Kuenheim said a year ago that they will not build a truck.

On the other hand, Mercedes-Benz is actually already working to develop the next premium truck in the market. “It’s easier for Mercedes because they have commercial vehicles and trucks and vans,” Werner said. “We do not. And perhaps it’s easier for Audi. Just take the Amarok, why not?” Werner said. “Yes it’s harder for us but we’ll be watching how Benz goes.”
