BMW Quad Turbo Diesel 6 Cylinder Engine Revealed!

BMW raised the bar once more in terms of turbo diesel engines.

In Europe, the diesel engine remains to be very popular especially on high-end sedans. Due to some efficiency issues, both BMW and Mercedes-Benz have stopped producing V-8 diesels a few years back. This has not stopped automobile enthusiasts from dreaming about diesel engines though.

Only Audi stood ground and still developed V-8s. BMW’s answer to this was the tri-turbo straight-six engine that has been offered in the 5 Series, 7 Series, and the X5. Now, it is time for this engine’s retirement. Of course, BMW will replace it with something even more awesome: a new, drool-worthy, i-6 diesel with four turbochargers nonetheless.

BMW officially confirmed the production of this engine at the Vienna engine symposium yesterday. This new, top-of-the-line engine will be worn by the BMW 750d xDrive. In the next months and years, it will also be fitted to other BMW models. This incredible machine delivers 394 horsepower from 4000 to 4400 rpm. Its maximum torque is rated at 561 lb-ft, available from 2000 to 3000 rpm. This translates into a 0-60 mph achieved in 4.5 seconds. Top speed is at 155 mph.

With this engine, BMW wanted to achieve a very clear objective of creating a badass V8 fighter. So they made this with more power, better response, and high-revving capability. Its architecture is very impressive. BMW’s new modular engine layout features four exhaust turbochargers. This is two high-pressure chargers and two low-pressure ones for your revving pleasure.

The massive low-pressure turbocharger was replaced with two smaller common exhaust turbochargers to improve performance. This design decision was cost-efficient and without adding more weight to the vehicle.

BMW is not done yet. Despite the immediate engine response and awesome high-end power, fuel consumption has been reduced by around 5%. And oh, the maximum torque is also limited by the capabilities of the XF 8HP 8-speed automatic.
