Is BMW switching to fully-digital gauge clusters?

Is BMW switching to fully-digital gauge clusters? Will this happen soon? Well, at the moment, the only BMW vehicles that feature fully, completely digital gauges are the BMW i3 and i8. Models that are considered to be highly technical like the BMW 4 Series LCI, 5 Series and 7 Series, do not have fully-digital displays. They are still using the traditional and physical gauge that doesn’t really look bad after all. If anything, it creates a more traditional feel for the cars. However, because of the fixed digital gauges within the screen, these clusters are not really customizable. It can be a practical choice for BMW to make the switch, just like Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Is BMW switching to fully-digital gauge clusters?

Mercedes-Benz first switched to fully-digital clusters with the S-Class. The two 12″ high-definition screens for its instrument panel and infotainment screen however have started to look dated. Audi’s optional Virtual Cockpit is a different story though. It is a masterclass in digital instrument panels that is housed in a traditional gauge housing and voila, completely customizable. One great feature is its ability to turn the entire screen into a gigantic Google Maps navigation screen.

Even though BMW’s choice to stick to traditional clusters may seem old-fashioned, they actually make up for this by giving us the best infotainment system and screen in the automotive industry. Audi and Mercedes-Benz aren’t very far too. Thus, it may be a good strategy for BMW to make the switch.
