Drag Race: BMW M2 vs Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG

As the newest member of the M line up, the BMW M2 has a lot to prove to enthusiasts. First off, it has to be at par, or even better than the other M cars that people love. So far, all the reviews have put a good word for the M2. However, it hasn’t been put head to head with its toughest competitor: the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG. Yes, they may not be really rivals in the same segment but it is the closest that Mercedes-Benz has to offer. In fairness, BMW is also not offering a hatch that directly rivals the A45 AMG and RS3 models.

Here is a drag race video that puts the BMW M2 and the Mercedes-Benz A45 head to head. Its 370 horsepower RWD M2 versus an all-wheel drive 381 horsepower A45 AMG. Battle on!

The M2 has been true to the BMW elements that has made the brand famous. This is a rear-wheel drive and is powered by an inline 6-cylinder engine under the hood. This is chosen over a four-pot or five-pot engine for a reason. Some will say that in a drag race, being a rear-wheel drive is a disadvantage because sending all the power to the rear axle may slow down the car. Sending power through all four wheels significantly aids traction, which puts the AMG at an advantage. However, driving a rear-wheel car is pure fun and it is worth it.

This drag race was not under good weather conditions. In fact, the track was damp. The Merc used for the video also has more power than the M2. It looks like the former is at a disadvantage. Surprisingly, it still managed to win with tricks up its sleeve. Thanks to the lightweight technology applied to the M2, it is lighter than the Merc even if BMW put a bigger engine.
